A standard SSL Certificate is issued to a single Fully Qualified Domain Name (ie mydomain.co.uk) which means it can only be used to secure the exact domain to which it has been issued. A Wildcard SSL Certificate is issued to *.mydomain.co.uk, allowing the certificate to be used on an unlimited number of subdomains and across an unlimited number of servers.

The cost of the certificate also covers you for additional subdomains or servers you may add in the future. GlobalSign Wildcard SSL is an option available for domainSSL and organisationSSL only. The main difference between the two types of wildcard is that an organisational SSL is also vetted against the company itself as well as the domain name, this gives the visitor extra confidence in the security of the site
